Update – ATR42
JEAN LABOUILLOIRE from Paris meditates on Australia’s regional airlines and provides an update on Europe’s newest contender for this market, the Franco-Italian ATR 42.
ATR42 Europe’s Newest Contender for the Regional Market
Little Information has been put out by Australia’s regional airlines concerning plans to re-equip with new aircraft for short and medium-distance routes. This situation Is understandable. For the past several years the nation’s two major domestic airlines (which either directly or through subsidiaries are the largest regional operators) have been fully occupied with the selection and Introduction of aircraft for the high and medium-traffic density routes (Boeing 767 and 737 for Ansett, A300 and the DC9 updating/refurbishing programme for TAA). Furthermore, the pattern of regional services has undergone considerable changes In recent years as a result of economic and other pressures. Declining traffic in some rural areas and higher aircraft operating costs have led to a drastic reduction in the total number of ports served by the regional airlines, though this trend has been partly counterbalanced by the emergence of commuter airlines.
Faithfully served for many years by the ubiquitous Fokker Friendship, the regional airlines have had few reasons to think about re-equipment. Nevertheless, the phasing out of the 30 or more Friendships currently in airline service in Australia is inevitable – age or total obsoleteness may well be the final reasons. Regional carriers will consequently have to focus their attention on this problem sooner or later, and early action may be required in the case of some airlines if competitiveness is to be maintained.
