East West Airline's first F28-4000 comes together at Fokker's Schiphol facility. EWA will place the new jet into operation in late March as a part of a rollover deal that sees EWA's older F27s being replaced by six new F-27-500s through the latter half of 1983.

It’s Only a Mirage:
The phantom glitches struck again at the editor’s cover caption for the December issue. Believe it or not, at one time the top Mirage was a dualseat 1110 but certainly not when it became finished artwork. Reader response to our specially commissioned cover portraits by Mitch Lovett has been overwhelming and I am pleased to say that the best is yet to come – Sunderland, Sabres, Mustangs and many other aviation immortals will feature on Australian Aviation’s covers in the coming years.
New Engine Offers Increased Potential for Orion and Hercules:
Detroit Diesel Allison has introduced the Mk IV version of their well known T56 turboprop for the US Modern Technology Engine (MTE) programme. The modified engine, which is not dissimilar to the Mk Ill version currently employed on the RAAF fleet of P-3B, P-3C, C-130E and C-130H aircraft, offers a 24% increase in takeoff power for a decrease in fuel consumption of 10%. The new engine offers max. takeoff power of 5575 shp as against 4591 shp for the current engine while still consuming 10% less fuel per operating hour. The new engines also allow higher cruise, climb and transit speeds which in themselves enhance range and reduce costs in addition to allowing reduced-power takeoffs thereby increasing engine reliability and reducing maintenance requirements in the long term. Allison estimates that if the US Navy were to re-engine its fleet of Orion ASW aircraft it would save on current fuel prices $34 million alone per year while the USAF could save $53 million and gain 36% more payload on a hot day.
