A highly-trained group of 1200 men who are responsible for the orderly flow of Air Traffic within Australia’s flight information regions have found themselves under occasional attack by Commuter Airlines and Charter Companies. The complaints are directed at the alleged controller’s contribution to the increasing ATC delays being experienced by aircraft on the ground, on taxiways and aprons, and airborne aircraft burning up precious fuel in holding patterns.
A working party from the Australian Aviation Community visited the United States recently to study and report on their Air Traffic Control systems. The idea was the brainchild of Bill Adams, of the Australian Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Airports visited included San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Jose, and the trip was made with the cooperation of Senior Officials of the Department of Aviation.
Ansett Airlines was represented by John Norwood, Manager, Line Operations, while Qantas sent Sandy Howard. The man representing Commuter Operators and General Aviation was John Smith, a Commuter Airline Captain.
