Interview – Keith Hamilton
John Spiers Interviews Keith Hamilton
Australia’s own airline, Qantas, is entering a time of new beginnings as it returns to commercial policies more in tune with the marketplace, after a period of suffering as an instrument of often m1sgu1ded government policy. John Spiers spoke to Qantas Airways Limited Director and Chief Executive, Mr K. R. Hamilton, CBE, about the new style of operations and outlook for the airlines.
JS: It is now fairly clear that Qantas is moving into a new style of management and operations. You have shaken off the days of ICAP (the federal government’s restrictionist international civil aviation policy) and are now moving into a more strictly commercial type operation. Would you care to fill me in on how you see that from your point of view?
KH: We have satisfied ourselves that the best result for Qantas can be achieved with fewer government controls – accepting the inevitability of some controls – and approaching the whole question of operating the airline on the basis of profit.
