Update – Gulfstream III
For many years the ultimate corporate status symbol was the Gulfstream II executive jet. This has more recently been eclipsed by its younger brother, the Gulfstream III featuring a new larger wing, complete with anti-drug winglets and a cabin stretch.
Gulfstreams are not new to Australia. Associated Airlines, the private airline serving the diverse requirements of BHP and CRA, has operated two turboprop Gls since the early sixties and introduced the jet-powered Gil in 1970. For a time Associated’s GII was a fleet leader in hours flown with more than 1000 hours being logged annually testifying to the reliability and thoughtful design pioneered with the Gil airframe.
The Gulfstream III is currently on offer to the RAAF for that service’s high-altitude photo-reconnaissance role, replacing the Amberley-based Canberras of No 2 Squadron. The RAAF requirement is for six such aircraft, but everybody knows that whoever wins this contract (the BAe 125-700, Falcon 50, Westwind 11, Challenger, and Learjet are also in the race), will stand a good chance of picking up some additional sales in the shape of RAAF VIP aircraft to replace Mystere and possibly 748 and SAC 111 aircraft. During a recent demonstration flight RAAF test pilots from ARDU put the Gill through its paces and were suitably impressed with the available performance.
