Comment- Chasing The One Per Cent

The winter of 1981 saw stage one of a welcome and long-awaited change to that old war horse – the Two Airline Policy.

Both Ansett, thriving under its new and aggressive management, and TAA are set to fight out the 1980s with different aircraft fleets, timetables and market objectives. Emerging from the artificial cocoon of “make-believe” competition nurtured by those uninspiring but reliable years created by the original Two Airline Agreement, TAA and Ansett are now setting different courses to achieve the same aim – to capture that elusive one per cent passenger share that can more than make the difference between corporate profit or loss for the trading year.

It is a characteristic of our current Airlines Agreement Bill that both carriers share an equal share of a route based on passenger kilometres. Therefore, the decision by ATI to go to small Boeings while TAA went for the A300 is stark testimony to the difference of opinion now shared by our two domestics. Or is it?
