GA Does More Of The Job:

General aviation aircraft are performing more of Australia’s total air transport tasks. A report released recently by Transport Australia shows that general aviation aircraft flew 82. 4 of every 100 hours flown by civil aircraft during 1979/80. Over the past 10 years, the figure has grown from 727 per 100 hours while hours flown by the airlines have dropped correspondingly from 27. 3 to 17. 6.

Total hours flown by general aviation aircraft during 1979/80 were 1,767,650. Flying training was the biggest sub-sector (346,350 hours or 19. 6% of total hours) followed closely by charter (330,701 hours or 18. 7%), private flying (273,360 hours or 15. 5%), business flying (271,673 hours or 15. 4%) and aerial work (252,834 hours or 14. 3%). Commuter operators followed next (128,110 hours or 7. 2%), then aerial agriculture (123,417 hours or 7%) with test and ferry (41,205 hours or 2. 3%). Over the past ten years, the figures show a fall off in training, private, charter, aerial agriculture and test and ferry flying. Rises were recorded in commuter, business flying and aerial work.
