New Soviet Fighters on Way:
US sources confirm the existence of a new two-seat version of the MiG-25 Foxbat. The new aircraft, termed Super Foxbat has a full look-down radar capability with missiles in the Hughes Phoenix class The Super Foxbat boasts a combat range of 1,000nm while its radar can track multiple targets out to a maximum range of 165nms. Another new MIG, designated the MiG-28 or 29 is also being prepared as a more capable yet simpler-to-operate version of the established MIG-23/27 Flogger family. This aircraft itself is the subject of ongoing testing in the carrier role and will probably equip initial units of the Soviet Navy’s first large tonnage (60,000 tons plus) aircraft carrier which is currently under construction on the White Sea. The Sukhoi bureau is also building a new Mach 2. 3 fighter in the F-18A class while work also continues on a dedicated anti-armour attack aircraft similar to the USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II, ironically this aircraft looks identical to Northrop’s ill-fated YA-9A which lost out to the then YA-10 for selection as the future USAF ground support aircraft.
ALCM Soon to Enter Service:
The first B-52G units to receive Boeing AGM-868 cruise missiles will become operational this September. Initially, the B-52G will be limited to carry 12 missiles externally but by 1986 modifications will permit eight more cruise missiles to be carried internally in place of conventional free-fall nuclear bombs and SRAM short-range missiles. SAC plans to purchase 3,418 AGM- 868 missiles to equip all B-52G aircraft with 20 rounds each by the end of the decade.
