Airbus Industrie has a new twin engine single aisle aeroplane proposal under consideration for future development. This aircraft is designated the SA1. It is considered by TAA to be an ideal replacement for its DC-9 jets if the SA1 is built it will carry about 120 passengers

Is It Cheaper by Car or by Plane?
Boeing have released an interesting study which highlights the cost advantages of flying, particularly when the reason for a trip Is business The linchpin of the study is based on a 200-mile trip, roughly equivalent to a Sydney/Canberra sector Based on prevailing 1979 US prices, the study indicated that the trip taken by car would cost $198, while by air $168. The difference favouring air transportation lies primarily in the fact that the trip was completed in one day whereas two were required for the car driver. This naturally entails accommodation and food expenses not suffered by the air traveller who as a bonus also gets twice as much work done due to completing the assignment in half the time.
The report also showed that flying was more fuel efficient than driving and that on a 500-mile sector at 65 per cent load factor air travel represented a 50 per cent saving in fuel on a seat/mile basis. For the year ending August ’79, petrol rose by 46 per cent. hotel rooms rose by 14 per cent and food Jumped 11 per cent as against an 8 per cent increase in basic air fares. Boeing also indicated that if Just 50 per cent of the people who drive 100 miles by car (Sydney/Newcastle, etc) could be induced over to air transportation then US earners would record an increase of 40 per cent in passengers worth an estimated $10 billion in revenue. A precursor to this was seen last year when due to petrol shortages, particularly In California, many former motorists were switching to commuter airlines for 100 miles or more.
