Narrative by Norm Wells
Dick Pascoe and I arrived at Ubon in December 1966. At that time the MIGs were quite active and had been forcing the F-105s and F-4s to jettison a lot of ordnance short of their targets. It was decided to conduct a MIG sweep to cut down the MIG problem. This, of course, was the famous “Operation Bolo” which resulted in the downing of seven MIGs, with no losses to us. We were scheduled to go on this mission, but our leader had to abort after take-off, and it was wing policy to abort in pairs, so we returned shortly after take-off· We were bitterly disappointed at missing out on the mission, but a few days later we had a chance to make up for it.
