Ecureuil .. at last a true rival for the Jetranger
When Aerospatiale looked about for an Alouette II replacement, their first glance speared in the direction of the Gazelle . . .
There was only one snag when they made their first study way back in 1971; the Gazelle, itself rolled out of the first production line in 1975, was essentially a military type not ideally suited for civil adaptation.
So says Aerospatiale’s deputy helicopter design director Rene Mouille when detailing the birth of the highly successful Ecureuil AS-350, currently and progressively being exposed and marked in Australia by Ansett General Aviation Helicopter Sales Division based at Bankstown, NSW.
