RAAF Combat Training Philosophy

Nose up in a steep climb, the Mirage accelerated past 500 knots as it vectored northeast high above the scenic tranquillity of Port Stephens tracking a small blip on its Cyrano radar-scope. The small blip was closing fast, approaching at almost 800 knots from the east. That blip was the enemy – a hostile fighter that would close to visual range in less than 20 seconds.

The Mirage, in full afterburner, made a sudden 90-degree turn to meet the aggressor head-on. Seconds later the “enemy” passed to port, with the closing speed of the two aircraft well past Mach 2. The Mirage broke into a hard turn and accelerated after the “enemy”. The other aircraft pitched up in the vertical and performed a split-second reverse as the Mirage closed. Both aircraft were now subsonic and fighting for their lives, one would, at any second get a clear annunciation tone on their Infra-Red (IR) missiles that would tell them the probability of a hit if fired “now” would be strong. Three minutes later the two aircraft disengaged, both departing each other at . a rate that would put a mile a second between them.

The battle was over, it was now time to return to base.
