Qantas’s A380 project was named the National Project of the Year by the Australian Institute of Project Managers in Adelaide on October 13.
The project beat 107 other submissions to take out the prize. The AIPM noted that that the $2 billion project took six years and involved more than 1000 people while also having to deal with delays from Airbus was challenging and impressive. Chairman of the judging panel, Simon Woolrych, said, “Three aircraft have entered service as per the planned schedule, program costs are within budget, customer feedback is outstanding and long lasting efficiency improvements have been introduced to the business.”

The AIPM awards are judged by a panel of nine project management academics and professionals, with project awards in eight categories, three individual awards and the national awards. The A380 project also won the Defence/Aerospace category award, while the The Headquarters Joint Operations Command Project won the award in the category of construction/engineering over $1 million.
