Airbus launches bio-fuel ‘value chain’ with Spanish government, Iberia

written by australianaviation.com.au | April 4, 2011

Airbus has signed an agreement with the Spanish government and flagship carrier Iberia Airlines to develop a biofuel ‘value chain’, intended for commercial use.

Bringing together farmers, oil refiners and airlines, the value chain agreement aims to promote and back initiatives to develop a complete biofuel production chain for Spanish aviation, using sustainable resources from production to consumption in commercial aviation.

Officials present to sign the agreement on March 31 included Airbus president and CEO Tom Enders, Iberia Airlines chairman Antonia Vazquez and Spanish Transport Secretary Isaías Táboas.

“Biofuels are a must for aviation to achieve our industry’s ambitious CO2 reduction targets. In fact, we believe that biofuels should primarily be reserved for aviation as our industry has no other viable alternative energy source,” Enders said.

“All industry players including governments have a role in helping to reduce global CO2 emission levels. Airbus is supporting value chains to accelerate the commercialisation of aviation biofuels.”
