RNZAF To Retire Andovers
After two decades of service, the RNZAF has announced plans to retire its ageing Hawker Siddeley Andover tactical transports. Of the nine aircraft still in service, five are to be retired and sold this year while the other four will stay on for another two years to serve in crew training (for Hercules, Orion and 727 aircrew), parachute training and VIP transport tasks. This decision was a cost cutting measure, as confirmed by the Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Carey Adamson who stated that the move would save $NZ4 million every year. Ten ex Royal Air Force Andovers were acquired in the mid 1970s. Ironically they were among a number of Andovers the RAF retired in 1975 due to budget cuts.
Users To Pay For Wellington Terminal
The New Zealand capital’s planned $NZ83 million new terminal may ultimately be paid for by airport users, reports Danielle Doney. Passengers already face a $NZ4.90 charge, however, industry concerns of a 33\% increase to$NZ6.50 by 1998 have not been allayed by Wellington Airport administrators. The airport’s chief executive, Don Huse, says the increases are justified by the improvement of facilities for passengers who now use ‘a 1930s model’ terminal. Mr Huse has also indicated that an alternative to passenger charges is a flat departure tax for all domestic flights operating out of Wellington. Air New Zealand has indicated it would absorb increases as far as it could, but it may be forced to pass increases on to passengers. Discussions with airlines are continuing.
