The USAF has assigned the designations YF-22A and YF-23A for the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) prototypes, which are expected to be ordered from two contractors, or teams of contractors, to commence testing at the end of 1989. Following the fly-off, one of the aircraft will enter production as the F-22A or F-23A.
The maiden flight of the Dassault-Breguet Rafale A took place at Istres on July 4. During the one-hour flight, the aircraft reached Mach 1.3 and attained an altitude of 36,000 ft (10,970 m).
