Melbourne Airport and Qantas Group have teamed up in a commercial agreement to support terminal expansion, runway development, and lounge upgrades.
The Flying Kangaroo says that the deal will specifically support Melbourne Airport’s $4.5 billion international terminal expansion, as well as an extended fifteen year commitment to the airport’s third runway.

Terminal upgrades will allow Qantas customers to access a “faster, more streamlined” check-in, as well as automated bag drop sections and premium access areas.
This upgrade will also include a larger baggage reclaim hall to support the airport’s round the clock operations, and will see “additional space” for Australian Border Force work.
“We’re proud to be Australia’s largest 24-hour gateway and pleased to be partnering with Qantas to deliver the most significant upgrade to Melbourne Airport in its history,” said Melbourne Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Lorie Argus.
“Our partnership will bring together Melbourne Airport’s investment in critical infrastructure with the Qantas Group’s investment in aircraft, customer experience and network growth, creating new opportunities for travellers and Victoria’s economy.
“Our investment in a third runway opening in 2031, coupled with the Qantas Group’s 15-year agreement supporting its delivery, is a significant vote of confidence in Melbourne.”
The agreement will also see Qantas deliver a new and improved International Business Lounge for customers, which is set to meet growing demand in coming years.
The lounge is expected to be finalised and ready for use by 2029.
Jetstar is also expected to benefit from the partnership, with plans to increase the low-cost carriers services in and out of Melbourne Airport.
“This will unlock growth for both Qantas and Melbourne Airport and improve the travel experience for millions of our customers every year,” said Qantas Group Chief Financial Officer, Rob Marcolina.
“From check-in to our lounge experience to our new fleet, we’re investing right across our business to reshape the way our customers travel to and from Melbourne.
“Qantas and Jetstar currently fly to 17 international destinations from Melbourne and we look forward to increasing that number, helping to connect more Australians with the world, and growing Victoria’s tourism economy.”
Qantas expects “some” of their new Airbus A350-1000LRs to be based in Melbourne. It follows the A350-1000ULR variant successfully landing at the airport in test flight last week ahead of Project Sunrise operating its first commercial services next year.
