The FLS Optica is set to join the small but growing list of light aircraft to be built in Malaysia. A recently signed agreement sees FLS transfer Optica production to UK company RCR for 12 months to meet European orders before production shifts to Gegasi Industries in Ipoh, Malaysia (FLS will retain design and certification rights and responsibilities). RCR has 20 Optica orders, while Gegasi plans to build up to 50 Opticas a year. The deal was brokered by British Aerospace Airbus.

Gv Testing Well Underway
Flight testing of the Gulfstream V long-range corporate jet is continuing with about 300 hours logged in well over 100 flights. Although the aircraft is proceeding satisfactorily with targets being exceeded, there have been a couple of problems to overcome. One has been the tendency for the first aircraft to fly right wing low at higher speeds, requiring more lateral trim than expected. Examination of the problem revealed noticeably different camber profiles on the two wings, the result of a manufacturing error by the wings’ builder, Northrop Grumman Vought. Correction was made by adding vortex generators. Specific items which have already been presented to ASA’s board of management include contracting out the National Distribution Centre, publications, air traffic control training and outstation towers; reducing the number of field officers; and eliminating duplication in human resources, finance and planning. The program was instigated by AirServices itself, rather than wait for an imposed cost cutting exercise. GM Corporate and Employee Relations, Tom Grant, said “In doing this we will become much more responsible for our own future. We will protect the shareholders’ interests and stay in touch with our client’s demands and expectations and improve delivery and cost competitiveness of our services against world standards”.
