Tasmanian based Sea Wings International has released details of its proposed Sea Wings series of Wing in Surface Effect very high speed marine transports, the first of which is due to be commissioned this winter. Registered and operated as marine vessels, the Sea Wings have aircraft like speeds of up to 160kt (297km/h) yet with four times the engine efficiency of aircraft. Using ground effect the Sea Wings takeoff to cruise at an altitude of five to 12 metres (depending on the craft's size). Sea Wings International is currently working on three Sea Wings models, the 1500kg (3305lb) max takeoff weight four seat V1.5, the 20 passenger 5000kg (11,015lb) MTOW V5.0 and the 45 passenger 12,000kg (26,430lb) MTOW V12.0. Air Marshall Islands has appointed Thomas Ryan as its Chief Executive Officer. Ron Wannet is now Cathay Pacific’s Brisbane Operations Manager. Peter Schaap has been appointed Manager Australia for Solomon Airlines.

science Qantas has reported an operating profit of $A246.5m for the six months to December 31, an increase of 21.5% over the same period in 1994 and in line with prospectus forecasts. Profit after abnormals was $A148.3m (up 15.2%). Refer Airline Affairs for further details. Ansett’s contribution to TNT’s $29.1m net profit before abnormals for the second half of 1995 was just $12.3m before tax, down almost 78% over the corresponding half in 1994. TNT’s consolidated operating revenue for the period was $3.7bn, up from $3.07bn for the same half in 1994. TNT says Ansett New Zealand and Ansett International traded profitably during the six month period. Lockheed Martin has posted a $US1.1bn ($A1.4bn) net profit (excluding a $US690m charge for merger and consolidation expenses) for its first year of operations to the end of December 1995, a 17% increase even though revenue remained largely unchanged at just under $US23bn ($A30bn). Sales for the aeronautics division were $US6.6bn ($A8.7bn). Kiwi Travel International Airlines has announced a pretax $NZ1.08m profit for its first 10 months of operation on ticket sales of $NZ13.5m, refer New Zealand News on p76 for details. British Airways has announced a third quarter (to Dec 31) pretax profit of $214m on revenue of $3.9bn, up 30% and 8.7% respectively on the same period in 1994. The result takes the airline’s profit for the nine months ending Dec 31 to $1.1bn, up 24% on the same period in 1994. Eva Air has reported $9.5m profit for the 12 months to December 31, its first since commencing operations in 1991. Revenue sales for the year were $1.4bn. Air New Zealand recorded a consolidated net profit after tax for the six months to December 31 of $NZ135.1m, down from the $NZ140.5m result for the same period in 1994 (but its second highest interim profit in the company’s history). Total operating revenues increased by $NZ27.7m or 1.9% to $NZ1.5bn.
