Gold Coast Airport has seen its busiest-ever April, with passenger numbers exceeding half a million.

The airport recorded a total of 570,703 passengers in April 2026, up 41,606 from the same time last year and surpassing the previous April record set in 2018. It comes after the airport saw one of its busiest-ever holiday periods over the summer peak earlier this year.

“This year the Queensland and New South Wales school holidays overlapped which drove a spike in travel demand between Good Friday and 19 April,” said Queensland Airports Limited’s chief of aviation, Adam Rowe.

“The busiest day was the last day of school holidays on 19 April when more than 22,400 passengers passed through the terminal.

“Travellers also benefitted from more options this year, with increased capacity on key domestic routes as well as internationally on Bali, Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton and Dunedin in New Zealand.”

According to Rowe, the strong month comes despite a “challenging environment [for airlines], with global uncertainty pushing fuel costs higher”.

“We’re continuing to work closely with our airline partners to support their networks and look for opportunities to maintain and grow services in a sustainable way,” he said.

“What’s encouraging is the Gold Coast market remains resilient and our region continues to be a destination of choice for both domestic and international visitors.”

It comes as Qantas is set to launch services between the Gold Coast and Auckland this month, while Fiji Airways will fly to Nadi.

Starting from 16 June, Qantas will operate three flights per week year-round from the Gold Coast to Auckland, connecting Queensland’s tourism capital with New Zealand and providing customers with enhanced connectivity across the Tasman.

Customers will be able to connect via Auckland to four other domestic destinations across New Zealand on Jetstar, including Christchurch and Queenstown, as well as Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Meanwhile, starting 11 June, Fiji Airways flights will operate three times per week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, on 737 MAX 8 aircraft, offering connections through Nadi to and from North America via Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Vancouver.
