Four RNZAF Airtrainers are being painted in temporary paint schemes as part of trials to improve visibility and maintenance costs. The first aircraft to be repainted was NZ1938, which was rolled out in this bright yellow scheme in late November last year. The other Airtrainers to be painted will be white, red and black respectively. The RNZAF's fleet of 15 CT-4s are now due to be repainted so the opportunity was seized to trial new single colour schemes that would make the aircraft easier to see in the air, reduce the cost of repainting as a single colour will be less expensive than the current red and grey scheme and will allow the use of new modern longer lasting paints. When the trial is completed the best overall scheme will be progressively applied to the Airtrainer fleet as they come up for repainting. (RNZAF)

Major Defence Programmes Given The Go Ahead
NZ Defence Minister Warren Cooper has announced plans to spend $NZ330m on four long awaited and sought after projects, three of which are aviation related. The major component of the spending is the agreement in principle for $NZ200m to be spent on six new naval helicopters to replace the Westland Wasps that currently operate from two of the four Leander class frigates. The helicopters would also operate from the new Anzac class frigates (the first of which for New Zealand is currently under construction) and a joint order with Australia, which requires eight new naval helicopters for its Anzac frigates (refer Defence Update elsewhere this issue), is a possibility.
The second largest programme in dollar terms is the allocation of $NZ100m for Project Kestrel, the Orion airframe upgrade programme. Key components of Kestrel include new wings, tails and engines, which should extend the Orions’ service life out to 2015. The RNZAF was the first export customer for the Orion, taking delivery of five P-3Ks in 1966, while a sixth machine, an ex RAAF P-3B via Lockheed, entered service in 1985.
