Airshow DownUnder ’95 Set For Take Off
Bigger, better, and hopefully drier is the cry for the 1995 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace Expo at Avalon. More aircraft, more exhibitors, more visitors, longer flying displays, an extra public day, more public amenities, more food outlets, a repositioned site and more permanent infrastructure are the promises from the organisers who have acknowledged the problems that arose with the running of the inaugural 1992 event. The Aerospace Foundation is confident that the problems with the first event have been dealt with appropriately, and that this year’s show will be bigger, more exciting, better value for money and more user friendly. Airshow DownUnder 1995 will consist of three trade days (with tight controls to ensure that visitors are in the aviation or associated industries) and three public days. The highlights for the trade days will include exhibitions from the major aerospace companies of 22 countries, with a relatively short two hour flying display. The three public days promise to offer the largest, most comprehensive flying display seen in the southern hemisphere, lasting up to 12 hours. Aircraft representing almost every sector of aviation will take to the skies in a display that looks set to last from 9am to 9pm. The actual aircraft scheduled to appear at the show too promises to be the most diverse and interesting yet assembled in Australia. In addition Melbourne will play host to a number of major aviation conferences as part of the associated International Aerospace Congress.
The Aircraft
Understandably the Aerospace Foundation has been reticent in too widely promoting the specific aircraft types scheduled to appear at the airshow, given the disappointments of the no-shows of the last event. Headlining the show though will be large American and Russian contingents. Russia looks set to continue its recent tradition of displaying a number of major types at the airshow. Spearheading this next Russian invasion will hopefully be a Tu-22M-3 Backfire bomber. The massive Backfire is a supersonic swing wing long range strategic bomber and maritime strike/reconnaissance aircraft. Tupolev is keen to bring the Backfire to Australia, but needs Russian government final approval. Tupolev also hopes to bring its Tu-204 airliner with Rolls-Royce RB211-535 engines. The 757 class Tu-204 has been a regular airshow participant over the past five years.
