Cathay Pacific has begun retiring its Lockheed TriStar fleet with the introduction into service of the carrier's first A340. The first TriStar to be retired was VR-HOF (pictured), the 27th TriStar built. VR-HOF was originally delivered to Air Canada in 1973 and joined Cathay in 1988. It operated its last revenue flight for the airline on November 5 from Bangkok to Hong Kong, and it has now been flown to Avalon where ASTAAS will reduce it to components. (Rob Finlayson)

Australia Reneges On Transtasman Agreement
The Federal Government has backed out of its commitment to establish a single aviation market between Australia and New Zealand, the responsible minister – Laurie Brereton – blaming New Zealand for the decision by claiming it has failed to deliver its side of the bargain. The idea of an integrated ‘borderless’ trans-Tasman aviation market was first established in the Australian government’s ‘One Nation’ statement of February 1992. A Memorandum of Understanding followed giving New Zealand carriers (which means Air New Zealand) full access to the Australian domestic market from November 1994.
In a letter to the New Zealand government, Mr Brereton said that New Zealand had not taken up the concept of a common border or fulfilled its commitment to implement the required passenger processing facilities. While the latter is certainly true – Air New Zealand has made no requests for terminal or airline space in Australia as yet – the real question is whether this is the point, or whether it is the fact that Australia has unilaterally withdrawn from an agreement and in effect narrowed Air New Zealand’s options for the future. In addition to effectively killing off the single market idea, Mr Brereton also said that Air New Zealand would not be granted any more ‘beyond rights’ from Australia.
