Japanese Scout Helo Unveiled

The contract was awarded by the Raaf as the air force has unveiled a mockup of the previously secret light observation helicopter it has been developing for the Japan Ground Self Defence Force (Jgsdf). The 3.5 tonne (7700lb) class Oh-X — has been designed to replace Japan’s Hughes/McDonnell Douglas Oh-6D light observation helicopters, and will perform both reconnaissance and armed scout roles.

The Oh-X is of classical attack helicopter configuration with the pilot and weapons operator sitting in tandem, although in this case the pilot sits in the forward seat. Power will be supplied by two Mitsubishi turboshafts, driving a four-bladed main rotor and a Eurocopter Fenestron-style shrouded tail rotor. Small stub wings will provide for weapons points for fuel. The development bill for Japan’s first indigenous helicopter is approximately ¥60bn ($A800m), with the manufacture of four flying and two static prototype/development aircraft scheduled for 1995, with a first flight during 1996. The Jgsdf has a requirement for 200 Oh-X.
