The Us Has Donated An Ex Us Navy Grumman F-14 Tomcat For The Australian Naval Aviation Museum At Nowra (Refer Text). The Mighty Tomcat Is Set To Become A Star, Drawcard Exhibit At The Museum, And Will Be On Display From Late January. The Museum Is Open Daily From 10Am To 4Pm (Except For Christmas Day And Boxing Day), And Can Be Contacted On (044) 21 1920.

Tomcat For Nowra Naval Aviation Museum
A former Us Navy Grumman F-14 Tomcat is set to become a prime exhibit at the Australian Naval Aviation Museum at Nowra. The fighter will be on permanent loan from the Us Department of Defense in much the same way as the B-52 at the Darwin Aviation Museum and the F-4E Phantom at the Point Cook Raaf Museum. The aircraft was due to leave the United States on October 18 on board the new navy troop support vessel Hmas Kanimbla, and arrive in Sydney on November 18. There it will be offloaded before being transported by road to the Nowra museum. A museum spokesman said that even with an over-swept wingspan of 10m (33ft) the Tomcat presents a formidable challenge to ensure that wide enough roads are selected for the journey to Nowra and its new home.
Also coming from the Usa with the F-14 on board the ship will be a Bell Uh-1 Iroquois helicopter and an M-60 tank. In part the tank will be used to balance the massive 19,050kg (42,000lb) empty weight of the fighter. (Once the Tomcat is offloaded from Kanimbla, the former Us Navy Lst will go into the Garden Island dockyards for modification work to emerge as a helicopter training and support ship for the Ran.)
