Townsend’s Helicopter Training School Cfi Wins Prestigious Churchill Fellowship

In what can only amount to a plus for the helicopter industry as a whole, Chris Townsend, the founder and Chief Flying Instructor of Townsend’s Helicopter Training School has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study helicopter standardisation and safety procedures with the major international helicopter operators and manufacturers in America and Europe.

Chris, like many in the industry, has been concerned for some time at the high helicopter accident rate in this country, and was persuaded to attempt to gain a Churchill Fellowship overseas study award as a means of pursuing his ideas for developing higher standards of helicopter training. Following the announcement of the award, I interviewed Chris to ascertain just what he intended to do with the knowledge and experience he expected to gain from his six months overseas study tour. I had previously gained an insight into his personal philosophy with regard to helicopter flying training when AA visited his training school at Hoxton Park two years ago.
