Air Safety — Mind Over Matter
Mind Over Matter
I well recall my instructor telling me all those years ago as I was about to get airborne for the first time, that my IQ would drop by 50% the moment I stepped into the aircraft. He then went on to say that it would only gradually return to normal after I had gained a few years experience and had learnt how to think in the air.
He was right of course, the mind overload when first learning to fly is considerable and it doesn’t take much to go wrong to upset your equilibrium. However, an added factor that he didn’t mention and which I was to learn for myself is that it is very easy to develop a mindset in the air and to let your thinking be channelled along lines that you would perceive on the ground as not very rational. The type of thing I am talking about is to imagine that the engine has started to run rough once out of sight of land on a water crossing (not Navy pilots of course, they are immune to this particular syndrome!)
