Seaview Sparks CAA Crisis

Caa In Upheaval As Seaview Air Accident Opens A Pandora’s Box

The crash of Seaview Air Rockwell 690B Turbo Commander Vh-Svq off the coast of Nsw en route between Williamtown and Lord Howe Island on October 2 has opened up festering wounds within the Civil Aviation Authority, the responsible government ministry and the aviation industry itself. No accident in recent Australian aviation history has caused so many claims and counter claims, concerns and possible political ramifications. With every passing day, new revelations and claims have come to light and the full effects of the accident will not be known for some time yet. Its cause is still under investigation by the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation (Basi), although some reports have suggested the aircraft hit the water in uncontrolled flight and broke up on impact.

What is known is that the aircraft’s pilot did not contact air traffic control about a problem, but reportedly spoke to another Seaview aircraft which was about 15 minutes behind. The bottom line, however, is more important than whatever the political implications of the accident may be, and that is the presumed deaths of the pilot and eight passengers aboard Seaview Air Flight Cd111 on October 2. Although pieces of wreckage from the aircraft were recovered from the sea during the search, no survivors or bodies were found.
