No 5 Squadron On Bougainville Boomerangs and four Wirraways of No 5 Squadron on Bougainville. The NZ Air Task force under G/Cpt G Roberts was assigned to support the Australian Army in the Northern Solomons. Since the New Zealanders had no army cooperation organisation, the RAAF provided No 84 Army Cooperation Wing consisting of No 5 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, No 10 Communication Unit, No 17 Air Observation Post Flight and No 39 Operational Base Unit. It occupied a camp site formerly occupied by US Marine Air Group 24. (George Hunt)

50 Years Ago…

November 1 — Britain. En route to an armed reconnaissance off Norway, a 455 Sqn Beaufighter (F/O G Hammond & F/Sgt G Henry) collides with a 489 Sqn aircraft. Both are lost. Burma. Four Australians — F/Lts O Shave, S Titterington, R Powell, and A Carlton — are killed when their Liberator fails to return from a special operation to the border of Burma and Yunnan Province. 357 Squadron is helping to raise and supply guerilla forces behind enemy lines.

November 1/2 — Burma. F/Os J Cartledge & G Williams of 45 Squadron on a moonlight “rhubarb” bomb the dispersal bays of Meiktila airfield. Their Mosquito is damaged by Aa fire, but they reach base safely.
