At last, after nearly a hundred articles and ten years of writing, I have been given a truly new production aircraft to evaluate! And what an aircraft! This classy, fast and remarkably quiet four seat retractable boasts excellent flying qualities, a good range and many carefully thought out detailed innovations. It also has that most important asset to a real aeroplane — a proper control column rather than an unwieldy airliner mimicking yoke.

Unlike all those revamped, repainted resurrections of tired old designs on today’s sluggish marketplace, the German Ruschmeyer is a real, live, highly refined, totally new aeroplane. It has an all-composite structure said to be not only very efficient but that most important thing in the nineties — environmentally friendly and, as test pilot Heiner Neumann demonstrated with a loop, slow roll, half cuban and stall turn, the Ruschmeyer is also very manoeuvrable. The firm has produced well-balanced all-round winners, including this retractable model, a lower power fixed gear derivative and an aerobatic trainer.
