Jabiru Approved

The Australian-designed and built Jabiru two-seat, all-composite light aircraft has been awarded its General Aviation Type Certificate by the Caa and the first St (Sport Trainer) models have been delivered to the Townsville Aero Club, the North Queensland Aero Club, the Royal Aero Club of Wa, Darwin Aero Club and Southern Skies Aviation.

The Jabiru is manufactured in Bundaberg, Qld, as are the engine and propeller, a combination regarded as unique in the western world and reminiscent of days gone by when de Havilland built the airframe, engine and propeller of most of its light and medium civil aircraft. The Jabiru was originally certificated as an Australian Ultralight in 1991 and since then some 55 have been delivered to flying schools and private owners. Now with full certification to its credit, the aircraft is seen as a viable replacement for older Cessna 150 and 152s at flying training organisations. The Jabiru’s operating cost is claimed to be less than $25 per hour compared to the Cessna’s $65/hour, while a fuel burn of just 12 litres/hour is slightly more than half that of the Cessna.
