Issue 102: November 1994

Beyond Belief!

Readers who enjoy that wonderful television series Yes Minister would have been inspired by the orchestrated charade of appeasement to every self-interest group within the Alp in the weeks leading up to that party’s annual conference in Hobart. From our perspective as aviation persons our primary interest as one such self-interest group was indeed the fate of the nation’s airports. A not inconsequential matter given that the economic wellbeing of this great country relies so heavily upon air transport for its day to day operation.

However, logic, rational thought and planning for the long term are rarely traits that one can readily recall as outstanding attributes of politicians (from both sides of the chamber) and so the worst was expected from Hobart. We were not to be disappointed. As outlined exhaustively via this magazine in recent issues, the very concept of selling off our nation’s airports individually is an exceedingly dumb idea. However, to then deliberately accept the worst option available out of a bad bunch makes the final decision a travesty of what we, as Australians, are ultimately leaving to our children. One day our children will look back and ask just how we, as responsible citizens allowed this gross stupidity to occur.
