New funds in this year's Budget will see the Navy's Seahawk fleet fitted with Forward Looking Infra-Red units (FLIR) and electronic countermeasures (ECM). The FLIR will greatly enhance the Seahawk's nighttime detection and surveillance capabilities.

Important Aviation Projects Included in 1994-95 Budget
Royal Australian Navy capital equipment projects continue to dominate Defence spending in that key area in the 1994-95 Budget, and will continue to do so for at least a few years yet. But some important aviation programmes are included in the new major capital equipment items approved by the Government in the 1994-95 Budget context.
The Defence Budget of $9,637 million is down $163 million or 1.7% on the 1993-94 year. This is due mainly to a special payment (to be recovered later) for Defence housing, and various one off items. The Budget has been strongly criticised by the Federal Opposition, and others, particularly on the grounds that it represents only 2.1% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is trending to go below 2.0% of GDP, which on a world scale is very low.
