Qantas Denied Traffic Rights From NZ to the USA
Wellington negotiators seem to have closed the door tightly on a Qantas request to fly North American services through New Zealand.
The Qantas request was a key demand in talks between the two governments in February. The Australians hoped to persuade the New Zealand Government that there would be tourism benefits to both countries if the request was granted. But even before negotiations began, the New Zealand Deputy Secretary for Transport, Mr Brian Lynch, was on record as saying the Australians would have to offer Air New Zealand something very attractive in return and he could not see what they could offer that was of sufficient interest.
