The 330 Super Commuter

Undoubtedly the most successful airliner ever built is the venerable Douglas DC3. Forty-four years after its first flight there are still a very large number fulfilling a variety of roles from regular passenger transport to various military duties.

What has made this Douglas twin near-immortal is that owing to the tremendous number produced during World War 11 there emerged in the post-war period a large number of ex-service flyers attempting to start scheduled airline operations in every corner of the world using surplus Dakotas which were often purchased for a song.

Most of these hopeful Freddie Lakers flew into the sunset never to return; whilst others went on to form the basis of some now great airlines. Mass air transport had arrived, par­ticularly in America where each city was now connected by scheduled air services.
