If Europe cannot get its act together on a future lightweight fighter project, Avians Marcel Dassault is prepared to go it alone with their Rafale, shown here in mock-up form at Paris. Rafale (a French wind) will test fly in late 1986 using two General Electric F404 engines in place of the proposed Snecma MBBs that a production version would use. Britain is also pressing ahead on its own EAP fighter which willalso flynext year. The combined total market for such an aircraft could exceed 2,000 units over the next twenty years.

Sfar 41 Approval Likely Before Year End:
Approval of a modified version of the controversial American SFAR 41 legislation is now expected by the DofA before Christmas. SFAR 41 was introduced by the US FAA in America to facilitate use of commuter aircraft exceeding the 12,500lb takeoff weight limit imposed at the time on FAR 23 design aircraft. Aircraft in Australia exceeding this weight limit had to be certificated to full airline standards which in most cases destroyed their commercial viability in the marketplace. Aircraft that were prohibited from being commercially saleable in recent years have been the Beech-Craft 1900, Beech King Air 300, Fairchild Metro III, Fairchild 300 and 400 and more recently the Dornier 228-201.
The decision to form an Australian certification standard on this class of commuter and corporate aircraft is the result of two ARPs into the problem, the latest of which was due for finalisation as we closed for press. It is now expected that the new legislation will be approved by year-end and will require birdstrike protection up to a 1. 8kg bird limit, a one-shot fire extinguishing system rather than two-shot, for certain critical fatigue data to be furnished and approved by the manufacturer, certain single engine and second segment climb performance capability to be available and for Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorders to be in- stalled.
