Two Boeing 7678 Fly Single Engine Diversions:

Two TWA Boeing 767ER aircraft on separate occasions recently flew single engine diversions while crossing the north Atlantic. On May 13 a diversion was made to land at Bangor, Maine after the 767 suffered a compressor stall while climbing through 40,000ft. The second incident occurred on June 6 when oil pressure was lost as the aircraft cruised at 37,000ft 270 miles southeast of Keflavik, Iceland where a stop was made. Standard TWA practice in the event of engine failure is not to attempt a relight and both aircraft made totally normal, and pre-rehearsed landings at their designated alternates.

TWA 767s are powered by Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines and while standby power resources were put into operation they were not needed as the 767 can fly quite comfortably at around 22,000ft on one engine with a full passenger load. On both occasions, the APU was started successfully at altitude in addition to the standby generator which is an overwater feature of the 767ER. TWA has recently replaced Lockheed L1011 Tristars on its lighter travelled trans-Atlantic routes
