Senate scrutiny for Australia’s airline safety standards

A wide ranging Senate inquiry into pilot training standards, regulations and reporting of safety incidents kicked off in October, promising close scrutiny of safety within Australia’s airline industry.

The inquiry was prompted by lobbying from South Australian independent Senator Nick Xenophon, who called for it after being approached about a number of issues by the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA). Senator Xenophon had previously worked with AIPA to oppose cockpit access regulations put forward by the government, which started a broad dialogue between pilots and the Senator.
