The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Queensland will acquire six new Beechcraft King Air 260C aircraft to modernise its fleet.
Set to arrive over four years from 2028, the new aircraft – replacing the existing King Air 200 fleet – will be fitted out with a bespoke Aeromedical Mission System (AMS) from Sunshine Coast-based company HeliMods.

“This is an exciting new chapter in the RFDS (Queensland Section) fleet strategy and a once-in-a- generation investment in the future of aeromedical care,” said RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO Meredith Staib.
“We’re proud to work with HeliMods to transform the new King Air 260C into the organisation’s next generation of life-saving aeromedical aircraft, capable of operating in some of the most challenging and remote locations across the state.
“This is an investment in aeromedical care for all Queenslanders. The new aircraft will be more powerful than its predecessor, helping our medical crews reach patients sooner and transfer them safely to the care they need.”
According to HeliMods founder Will Shrapnel, the company is “no stranger to working with the RFDS, having modified six Beechcraft King Air B360 aircraft into advanced aeromedical aircraft with state-of-the-art medical stretchers, integrated oxygen systems and digital connectivity”.
“Queensland’s size and remoteness present some of the most challenging healthcare delivery conditions anywhere in the world and the King Air 260C represents an important step forward in Queensland’s aeromedical capability,” he said.
“Working closely with RFDS (Queensland Section), HeliMods is developing and delivering an advanced aeromedical mission system that will help unlock the full potential of this next-generation aircraft.
“Together, we’re focused on ensuring the platform delivers exceptional patient care, crew safety and operational capability, supporting access to critical healthcare services no matter where Queenslanders live.”
The RFDS flagged the 260C as the “ideal replacement” for the B200 late last year, saying it is an improvement on the existing model.
“Like the B200, the KA260C can use smaller, unsealed airstrips that our B360 and B350 aircraft cannot access, allowing us to reach communities where others can’t,” the RFDS said.
“However, the KA260C also introduces advanced technology, which improves navigation in low visibility situations, increasing the likelihood that our crews can land safely, even when weather or light make conditions difficult.
“The aircraft’s enhanced power and faster climb rate mean shorter flight times, providing an advantage during critical medical transfers.”
The RFDS will celebrate its centenary in 2028.
