Will hydrogen succeed?
Hydrogen is being touted as a potential fuel for greener future aircraft – but do the will and the money exist to make the switch from traditional jet fuel?
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It was the first element, forming just a few moments after the Big Bang. It is also abundant on Earth, commonly found bound into compounds such as water.
Hydrogen offers great hope for a fossil-fuel-free future, or at least a significant reduction in the greenhouse emissions that cause climate change. This is because, when burnt, hydrogen releases mainly water vapour. Unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen combustion produces no soot or particulates, eliminating a major source of air pollution that has plagued conventional engines.
