Preparing next-gen pilots for a new era

With new technologies continuing to emerge, how can we ensure the new generation of pilots is ready for the flight deck of the future?

The aviation industry bears a unique paradox: it is simultaneously fast-paced and deliberately slow-moving. The industry is built on a foundation of proven, regimented procedures, rigorous safety standards, and ongoing training requirements. And yet, rapid technological changes, like AI, automation, and new innovative means of propulsion, are reshaping the horizon before our eyes, leaving us asking: what will the flight deck of the future look like for pilots, and how do we make sure our people are ready for it?

The question of how, as an industry, we can ever prepare our future pilots to operate in conditions we can’t even fully conceive of yet was a key topic of conversation during UNSW Aviation’s recent panel event, organised in partnership with The Honourable Company of Air Pilots.
