Money matters: what’s in the federal budget for aviation?
From Airservices to fuel security, consumer protections, CASA, and tourism, the 2026 federal budget is full of measures that will affect Australia’s aviation industry. Here, Hannah Dowling runs through just a few of the line items.
Morning show news programs, family dinner tables, online forums and social media comment sections have all been abuzz since 12 May, when the government handed down its 2026–27 federal budget. Delivered against a backdrop of high inflation and cost-of-living pressures, the news cycle has been swallowed up by the budget’s more controversial policies – particularly surrounding new tax implications for property owners and investors. However, there’s a lot more to this document than just negative gearing and capital gains tax reform – here’s what the federal budget delivers for the Australian aviation sector.
In total, of the $833.3 billion 2026–27 federal budget, approximately $731 million is dedicated directly to Australia’s aviation sector over the next four years, alongside several other non-direct initiatives that will directly impact the industry. The topline figure of $731 million is dominated by a whopping $600 million equity injection into Airservices Australia, with the remainder primarily earmarked for measures responding to the 2024 Aviation White Paper – Towards 2050.
