Fiji Airways is temporarily suspending one of its eight weekly flights between Brisbane and Nadi.
Flight FJ922/923, a late-night Saturday service, will be dropped from 25 April, leaving the regular daily service in place. The carrier is also suspending its Tuesday flights from Nadi to Dallas-Fort Worth between 5 May and 16 June.

“These changes are a direct response to substantially higher fuel prices and the current geopolitical environment, ensuring the airline can continue operating in a reliable, efficient, and sustainable manner,” the airline said in a customer advisory.
“Fiji Airways is proactively working to minimise any inconvenience. Customers affected by these changes will be contacted and provided with suitable alternative travel options.
“Fiji Airways remains committed to transparent communication and to supporting our trade partners in delivering the best possible outcomes for our shared customers.”
The late-night service is Fiji Airways’ least popular Brisbane flight and is not the main service used by tourists, Australian Aviation understands.
“This decision preserves Fiji Airways’ daily services for Queenslanders travelling to and from Fiji. Fiji remains an important part of our Pacific network, and with the main flights continuing every day, we expect minimal impact on travellers,” said a Brisbane Airport spokesperson.
Fiji Airways launched flights to Cairns last year and is planning a new service to the Gold Coast from 11 June.
Both Qantas and Virgin have increased airfares due to higher fuel costs after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which sees around 20 per cent of global oil traffic. At the same time, Air New Zealand has been forced to cut flights, and Jetstar has reduced its services in New Zealand.
According to Airservices, airlines are facing “heightened energy supply uncertainty, logistics risks and renewed inflationary pressures” due to the Iran conflict, with jet fuel a major concern.
“Jet fuel prices, which typically represent around 30 per cent of airline operating costs, increased around 80 per cent over the previous month, driving higher airfares and reduction in forward seat capacity by approximately three per cent over the next three months,” Airservices said in its Australian Aviation Network Overview for March.
“Combined with weaker consumer confidence, these factors are weighing on industry operating costs and near-term demand outlook.”
