Melbourne Airport will play host to a large-scale electric vehicle (EV) charging hub by year’s end.

Located on the corner of Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road and open to the public, the site will have 24 charging bays with 150kW and 300kW chargers, as well as two accessible bays, a bathroom, a canopy, and drive-through bays for larger vehicles.

“Since 2022 we’ve been building a network of EV charging sites around the country to support our customers on the road to electrification,” said Antoine Denis, general manager, bp pulse Australia.

“Now, with the backing of over 41,000 bp pulse charging bays across the world, we’re leveraging our global EV charging expertise to bring bp pulse’s first large-scale charging hub to Australia.

“Conveniently positioned in the Melbourne Airport precinct, we want to ensure this charging hub offers a quick and seamless way for drivers to recharge and get back on the road.”

The Melbourne Airport hub will be bp pulse’s first large-scale hub, meaning one with more than eight bays, and will also offer a discount to Uber EV drivers. The company has installed more than 290 charging bays in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, and the ACT over the past four years.

According to Melbourne Airport chief of ground transport, property and retail, Jai McDermott, the hub would “give better charging access for commercial passenger vehicle drivers, workers across the precinct and the broader community”.

“Not only will this be the first of its scale at an Australian airport, but we’re proud that BP Pulse has chosen to power the hub with 100 per cent renewable electricity generated from Melbourne Airport’s two onsite solar farms,” he said.

The news comes as Melbourne Airport carries out a major overhaul of its road network, slated for completion in September. Speaking in October last year, McDermott said the $500 million Naarm Way project will “transform the way passengers access Terminals 1, 2 and 3”.

“Naarm Way will be the biggest change to how passengers come to the airport since we opened in 1970 and it’s exciting to see the project taking shape,” he said.

“Our traffic modelling shows that without our new road network, passengers would be waiting an additional 28 minutes in peak periods by 2029.

“The new Pick Up and Drop Off zones will double our capacity, making it easier for people to drop off and pick up friends and family from Melbourne Airport.”

Around 37,000 vehicles visit Melbourne Airport every day.
