Alliance Airlines has unveiled an aircraft with a new livery celebrating Australian motorsport legend Sir Jack Brabham.

The Embraer E190, VH-A2N, has been painted with a green and gold colour scheme featuring an image of Brabham and his BT19 Formula 1 racer to mark 60 years since the racer’s third Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship and his first Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship in 1966.

“This aircraft signifies the magnitude of the achievements of Sir Jack Brabham, Ron Tauranac and the Repco-Brabham BT19 in 1966,” said Stewart Tully, managing director at Alliance Airlines.

“Alliance Airlines has a proud history of paying tribute to innovation and excellence through its special liveries. This latest design is in keeping with that legacy and pays tribute to an Australian icon whose passion forever changed his field.”

Brabham, the first Australian to win the Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship, took out his third title in 1966 along with the Constructors’ World Championship. Over his 23-year racing career, he won 14 Formula 1 Grand Prix races, making him Australia’s most successful Formula 1 driver.

His son David, managing director of Brabham Group Limited, called the Alliance livery “a wonderful and very meaningful tribute to one of the great moments in Australian sport”.

“The Repco-Brabham BT19 that propelled Jack to that historic title is clearly featured on the aircraft, making this tribute even more special,” he said.

“It brings to life this remarkable story in a very visible and powerful way. The Brabham family thanks Alliance Airlines for honouring this legacy.”

According to Alliance co-founder Steve Padgett, Brabham was also an aviation enthusiast, and was the first Formula 1 drivers to tour Europe in his own plane.

“He started a flying school at Bankstown, unusually for Jack, but then he decided to buy an aeroplane, and that’s where I really started to spend time with him,” said Padgett.

“He wandered over one day and said, Steve, I’d like to buy a new aeroplane. And I said, ‘well, Jack, we’d love to sell you one’. And he asked how much, and I gave him a price, and then I didn’t hear another word from him for the next five minutes.

“There’s a great story behind this, and that he was known in the UK as the master of the long pause, and that’s how he got deals done on motor cars and deals with me on aeroplanes.”

Alliance is Australia’s largest E190 operator, with 42 currently in service.
