Graham Maguire has been appointed to the board of the Federal Airports Corporation. Other appointments at the FAC include Jack Moffatt to Chief General Manager, Operations; Peter Snelling General Manager, Operations Policy and Regional Trunk Airports; Alan Mulgrew General Manager Sydney airport; and Graham Muir, General Manager Perth airport. Australia Air International has an- nounced a number of new appointments including Rodney Lovell, Director of Flight Operations; Gordon Power, Chief Pilot and Head of Line Operations; Robin Edwards, Chief Flight Engineer; and Richard Patterson, Director of Maintenance Engineering. Richard Frogatt has taken over the position of manager for passenger sales for Lufthansa and Lauda Air’s combined operations in Australia. Geoff Butler has joined the Melbourne office of the Australian Aviation Insurance Group. Anthony Bowra has been appointed as Deputy Chairman of the board of Australian Defence Industries. David Hoare is to take up the position of Chairman of the Defence Indus- try Committee. British Airways has announced two changes to its sales and marketing team in Australia with Bob Gogan becoming Manager Sales NSW & ACT while Jenny Lourey will become Manager National Accounts Australia. As part of moves to merge its regional subsidiaries into its parent airline, Ansett Express GM Julie Smith is being transferred to Ansett’s international division. Also at Ansett Tony Gauci has been appointed to Marketing Manager Regional Routes, while Eastwest GM Ken Crawford is to become Ansett’s Queensland. Jean-Paul Virelala is the new General Manager of Air Vanuatu. Current office bearers of the Sport Aircraft Association of Australia are Peter Wilkinson, President; Eleanor Crago Secretary; and Graeme Voigt, Treasurer.

Bottom Line

• Ansett Transport Industries returned to profitability for the year ending June 30 1993, posting an operating profit before tax and abnormals of $59. 5m, in contrast with an operating loss before abnormals and tax of $91. 2m in the previous year. The group did however, post an after abnormal loss of $181. 2m, accredited largely to unrealised foreign exchange losses. News Corporation a half owner of ATI, recorded a 72% profit growth for growthforthe same period to a record $864. 3m. American Airlines recorded a net profit for the second quarter of this year of $US47m compared with a net loss of $US183m for the same period last year. Cathay Pacific has reported a drop in profits for the first half of the year to $HK681m down from $HK1258in the first half of 1992. The result has been attributed to the recession on Cathay’s key markets of Europe and Japan, plus Hong Kong’s comparatively high inflation rate.
