Jetstar is set to fly larger aircraft on Brisbane–Canberra services, adding more than 19,000 new seats per year.
The low-cost carrier will replace A320-200s (pictured) with A321neo LRs between Brisbane and Canberra from April to October this year, each of which offers up to 52 additional seats per flight. It will be the first time Jetstar has operated the new aircraft into Canberra.

“Canberrans and visitors to the region have embraced our low fares and we’re pleased to bring our larger A321LR aircraft to the nation’s capital for the first time, adding more than 19,000 low fares seats on our Canberra to Brisbane route from April to October,” chief executive Stephanie Tully said.
“This gives Canberrans more opportunities to take off more to the Sunshine State while also supporting local tourism and hospitality businesses with more travellers able experience the many attractions that Canberra and the region have to offer.”
Jetstar currently flies up to 18 times per week on three services from Canberra to Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, with the extra Brisbane seats to bring capacity to more than 350,000 per year.
Canberra Airport chief executive Stephen Byron has welcomed the news of the upgauging, with Jetstar having already carried more than one million passengers into and out of the nation’s capital since the three routes were reintroduced following COVID-19 shutdowns.
“Canberrans love travelling to Brisbane, and having more seats available means better value and more flexibility, whether it’s for work, a weekend away or visiting family up north. This is also a welcome boost for local businesses by supporting inbound tourism,” he said.
“This additional capacity not only helps keep fares competitive, but it also gives passengers the chance to travel on Jetstar’s new aircraft, offering a more comfortable experience on one of our busiest routes.”
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has also given a thumbs-up to the move, calling it “fantastic news for travel affordability”.
“This will provide more affordable and frequent options when flying to South East Queensland,” he said.
“It also demonstrates confidence in Canberra’s tourism offering and aligns strongly with our tourism strategy to grow the Queensland market even further.”
The Brisbane–Canberra route is also served by QantasLink and Virgin Australia.
