Three RAAF P-8A Poseidons have wrapped up the latest iteration of Operation Gateway in Malaysia.

The aircraft, Australia’s largest-ever contingent to Operation Gateway, participated alongside around 90 Australian personnel operating from Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth to provide maritime domain awareness in the North Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

“One of the main differences on this trip is the first full deployment of three P-8A Poseidons, which has afforded us a lot more flexibility for operational flying and created some great training opportunities,” Squadron Leader Justin McCoy said.

“Another key difference is the deployment of personnel from 292 Squadron, which is our Operational Conversion Unit, allowing us to combine operational sorties with Operational Conversion training outcomes.”

The operation took place over two weeks from November to December, and is part of the long-standing bilateral security relationship between Australia and Malaysia, with 2025 marking 70 years of diplomatic relations.

“In 2026, Australia and Malaysia will be marking 45 years of Operation Gateway, run out of RMAF Butterworth,” said Squadron Leader McCoy, who next year will take command of 92 Wing Detachment Alpha at RMAF Butterworth.

“I’m very fortunate to be selected for this posting, which will allow me to build upon the great relationship that Air Force has with our Malaysian partners and to drive P-8A operations forward for the mutual benefit of both Australia and Malaysia.”

The news comes as the RAAF’s P-8A Poseidon fleet is set to receive major upgrades over the next few years.

Under the four-year Increment 3 Block 2 program, Australia’s P-8A fleet will receive upgraded antennas, sensors, and software designed to enhance processing power and communications, which will significantly boost the aircraft’s ability to detect, track, and engage advanced submarines.

Naomi Smith, director of Boeing Defence Australia sustainment operations, said the upgrades will offer the RAAF numerous enhanced capabilities.

“These upgrades, together with the delivery of the 13th P-8A, mark two important advancements for Australia’s defence of its vast coastline,” she said.

“Increment 3 Block 2 will deliver next-generation detection and targeting for our aircrews, while the newest aircraft strengthens fleet readiness and operational reach — all while maintaining full interoperability with the U.S. Navy’s P-8A fleet.”

Australia is the first international P-8A operator to receive the Increment 3 upgrade, with delivery of the RAAF’s 13th Poseidon taking place on 29 September. The 14th and final aircraft is scheduled to arrive in 2026.
