Indonesia AirAsia is set to join a crowded field of Melbourne–Bali operators next year.

The low-cost carrier will fly daily A320 services from Melbourne to Denpasar starting 21 March, adding around 130,000 seats per year, and offering promotional fares to entice new passengers on the popular route.

“Indonesia AirAsia’s fares will no doubt be competitive in this market, which is great news for holidaymakers looking to make their money fly further,” Jim Parashos, chief executive of Melbourne Airport, said.

“Bali is the third busiest route out of Melbourne behind only Singapore and Auckland, so it’s great to see more choice coming into the market which will continue to put downward pressure on fares.

“There’s something for every type of holiday maker in Bali and it’s now cheaper to fly there than many domestic destinations.

“While Bali is a favourite with travellers, Indonesia AirAsia has an extensive network across Indonesia and Asia which will make it easier for travellers to explore Bali and beyond.”

Indonesia is Australia’s largest international travel destination, seeing more than 1.7 million outbound passengers per year, and is growing rapidly from Melbourne.

According to the airport’s figures, outbound traveller numbers to September 2025 were up 34 per cent on the same period in 2019.

Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, acting CEO of AirAsia Indonesia, said the new service will offer seamless connectivity on the AirAsia network.

“This strategic launch strengthens Indonesia AirAsia’s presence in Australia and will provide more flexible and value-driven travel options for Australians,” he said.

“AirAsia’s extensive network and Fly-Thru service opens up opportunities for passengers to connect seamlessly to major destinations such as Phuket, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, without the need to collect baggage during transit.

“Travellers can also choose to explore more of what Indonesia has to offer with a wide range of domestic destinations.”

Melbourne–Bali is also served by Batik Air Malaysia, Garuda Indonesia, Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia. Indonesia AirAsia’s sister airline, AirAsia X, flies from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur.

Melbourne Airport earlier this year flagged a major expansion of its international terminal, including up to five new wide-body gates, as well as more room for shops, passenger waiting areas and airline lounges.
