Kate Holsgrove, Perth Airport’s chief commercial and aviation officer, said the route “provides a vital connection for people and trade between China and WA”.

“China currently represents Western Australia’s fourth largest international market by visitor number with 65,000 visitors in FY2025, injecting $457 million into the economy – so a direct connection to China is an important objective for Western Australia tourism industry,” she said.

“Chinese visitors deliver the highest tourism spend in Western Australia, with travellers typically staying seven nights and exploring multiple regions across the state, according to Tourism WA.

“We are working with Tourism WA to reconnect Perth to mainland China as direct aviation connections will provide a boost across the tourism, business, export, and education sectors which will provide benefits to the entire economy.

“In March, this year we signed an important Sister Airport partnership agreement with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The agreement includes a commitment to improve passenger flow, enhance cargo movements, and facilitate through-check services for passengers.”

The return of China Southern’s seasonal service comes as other airlines increase their services from Perth into Asia, with Jetstar last week launching direct flights to Manila.

Alongside the Jetstar and China Southern services, Cathay Pacific is going double daily to Hong Kong; Malaysia Airlines double daily to Kuala Lumpur; and All Nippon Airways daily to Tokyo until 19 April.

According to WA Tourism Minister Reece Whitby, around half of all international arrivals to Perth originate in Asia.

“More flights mean more visitors to our incredible State, more opportunities for tourism operators to showcase their offerings, and more jobs for Western Australians in the tourism and hospitality sectors,” he said.

“These expanded services are a strong endorsement of Western Australia’s growing appeal as a tourism and business destination.

“Securing additional nonstop aviation services will provide a valuable boost to our tourism economy, supporting local businesses and local jobs, part of the Cook Government’s economic diversification strategy in attracting out-of-state visitors to WA.”

China Southern first flew to Perth in 2011 as part of the airline’s “Canton Route” international strategy launched in 2009.
